Ray is a lovely and well put together unraced youngster with a kind disposition. He has a very expressive eye and is intuitive about those around him. He made fast friends with one of his riders’ 6-year-old son and loves attention from his kid! Ray’s expressive nature carries over into his movement and he shows nice potential for dressage, and is also a steady mount for trail riding and maybe even foxhunting! He is gentle and easy to handle with good ground manners and no vices.

He has three comfortable gaits including a nice rolling canter, and is more of a push type ride as he builds strength and stamina under saddle. He is working to carry consistent bend and balance himself while stretching into contact. Ray works happily in the arena and hacks around the farm on his own and with company. His age definitely doesn’t show as he confidently ambles around the farm, through trees and across water, even bareback! He is best suited for an intermediate rider interested in flatwork as he did have an injury which has been rehabbed. He is currently turned out with a small group of geldings, and easily fits into the middle of the group.

Light Off is Retrained & Remarkable Challenge eligible. As such he will receive a shipping credit of up to $500, and an invitation to compete in Challenge-specific classes at the 2019 New Vocations Charity Horse Show Series. R&R adopters who choose to participate in the competition will be eligible to compete for $5,000 in cash and prizes; they will also receive a FREE stall at the Charity Horse Show and FREE entry into Challenge classes.

New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, a fee is set for each horse that will ultimately help the horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means the program cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.

Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated and worked with by a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses the history of each horse and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.

While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that the costs associated with the ongoing care and additional training for each horse post-adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront that he or she will have more funds available to cover the ongoing costs of properly caring for a horse.
