You know that horse that walks into a space and just seems to be the boss? That’s Port Arch (“Archie” around the barn). Maybe it’s his regal pedigree, but Archie just has that very ‘chill’ attitude, like he owns the place. He’s also got the good looks– he’s adorable, and he knows it!

Fortunately, that ‘chill’ demeanor translates to his ground manners too! Archie is a gentleman for grooming and tacking, whether it be free in the stall or tied, and he stands well for the farrier as well as for bathing, clipping mane-pulling etc.

In turnout, Archie is the first to the gate and prefers to be ‘the boss’ in his group too. He seems to convince turnout buddies that he is the leader with ease and little effort. Even though he can act like a tough guy though, he is a sensitive soul that loves cuddles and scratches on his neck, chest, face, and just about anywhere he can get them! He is also a little bit sensitive-skinned: he can get blanket rubs, and would benefit from an adopter who doesn’t mind pampering him a bit– he’d prefer a wither relief blanket in the winter if he can get it, pretty please!

Under saddle, Archie is as quiet as they come. He has more ‘whoa’ than go, and is never in any rush to get anywhere. He is a forgiving guy and doesn’t mind being backed by a less experienced rider. Archie will happily go around on a long rein, but if you want to ask for contact, he will do that too! He might not be the biggest horse, but he has a nice, reaching stride that covers ground and feels smooth. Archie is very balanced both directions, picks up both leads great, and is a pleasure to ride. Other horses in the riding arena? No problem, Archie doesn’t mind! If you want a comfortable, easier ride, Archie is your guy!

Port Arch is suitable for all disciplines, but we think he would make a great hunter prospect. He could even be a good addition to a lesson program! Archie would would be happy with an intermediate rider, or an advanced beginner working with a trainer.

Archie is eligible for the RRP’s 2019 TB Makeover!

New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, a fee is set for each horse that will ultimately help the horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means the program cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.

Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated and worked with by a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses the history of each horse and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.

While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that the costs associated with the ongoing care and additional training for each horse post-adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront that he or she will have more funds available to cover the ongoing costs of properly caring for a horse.
