This little gem is adorable and athletic to boot, giving her all in everything asked of her and proving she’s got loads of potential to go in many directions! Smoke City hacks around the farm confidently on the buckle by herself and with company, steps over poles without question, has free jumped, and is is picking up basic dressage principles with ease. She is very sensitive to rider aids and will excel with an experienced rider in technical disciplines, and morph into your perfect trail horse as she leaves the arena.

Smoke bonds with her person and will become your faithful sidekick once she opens up. Under saddle she is learning to stretch into contact and use herself, showing glimpses of greatness and improving with every ride. She has free jumped to 3′ with no previous attempts at jumping and has room to spare. With patience and thoughtful training, this mare will not disappoint!

She is currently turned out with mares and is in the middle of the pack. She knows exactly when it’s time to come in and insists on being first through the gate, then quietly tracks right along with you toward the barn to await her meal. She has a calm demeanor and is very easy to handle on the ground, she stands in cross ties, walks patiently by your side, and waits quietly for cues. She did have a chip removed from her knee after her last race, but has been foot perfect since beginning training and should not be limited.

Smoke City is Retrained & Remarkable Challenge eligible. As such she will receive a shipping credit of up to $500, and an invitation to compete in Challenge-specific classes at the 2019 New Vocations Charity Horse Show Series. R&R adopters who choose to participate in the competition will be eligible to compete for $5,000 in cash and prizes; they will also receive a FREE stall at the Charity Horse Show and FREE entry into Challenge classes.

New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, a fee is set for each horse that will ultimately help the horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means the program cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.

Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated and worked with by a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses the history of each horse and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.

While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that the costs associated with the ongoing care and additional training for each horse post-adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront that he or she will have more funds available to cover the ongoing costs of properly caring for a horse.
