Description

Stevie’s Wonder, also known around the barn as “Stevie,” is a big stout boy who would make someone a wonderful pleasure riding partner!

Stevie is a no-fuss easy ride with three smooth, ground-covering gaits. He’s accepting of the leg and responsive to the aids. He goes in a single-jointed smooth snaffle and has a soft mouth. He is sane, sensible, and a true pleasure to work with and have in the barn. He’s good leading in and out of the barn. He has no stable vices.

Stevie is looking for an intermediate level rider that wants to enjoy a slower-pace life with him. He is suitable for Dressage, pleasure, and trail and recreational jumping. He retired from racing last year due to soft tissue injury that has been fully rehabbed and healed but does limit him to noncompetitive jumping disciplines. Approved adopters are welcome to the veterinarian evaluation we have on file.

Stevie is good to work around and he enjoys grooming, bathing, massage, and scratches on the neck. He picks up his feet nicely, stands well for the farrier, and is currently wearing front shoes. He is up-to-date on his vaccines and deworming.

Stevie is 2020 Retrained & Remarkable Challenge eligible. As such he will be invited to vie for $5,000 in cash and prizes at the 2020 New Vocations All-Thoroughbred Charity Horse Show at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, where he will receive a free stall and free entry into R&R Challenge classes (which include English and Western pleasure, hunter hack, trail, driving and in-hand classes).

ADOPTION FEE POLICY

New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, we set a fee that will ultimately help each horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means we cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.

Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses each horse’s history and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.

While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for each horse after adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront, he or she will have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for a horse.
