Description

Trend is a true testament to how experienced racehorses can have a leg-up in their second careers from their time on the track. At 12 years old and with 44 starts under his belt, Trend is a “been-there-done-that” kind of guy.

He is quiet but personable in the stall and has impeccable ground manners. He is totally unfazed by new environments and happy to stand, even ground-tying for grooming/farrier work/bathing, etc. Trend has also had several years to adjust to the post-track lifestyle. After his last race, he started living a retiree’s lifestyle, but his previous owners realized that he might be happier still having a job aside from grazing!

Trend was remarkably easy to get back going under saddle. From the get-go he was eager to work and uncomplicated. Trend is the kind of gentleman that will stand quietly at the mounting block until you’re safely on his back and ask him to move forward. He is responsive but not at all spooky—indoors or out! Trend has balanced gaits both directions and no issues picking up leads.

He has no known injuries and possesses all the basics he needs to go many different directions with even an intermediate rider.

Trend is a cribber in his stall, but he will pick one spot (never wood with us) and doesn’t deviate from that spot. His cribbing is controlled with a cribbing collar, but he does not wear it when he is in turnout. He doesn’t crib when he’s outside.

ADOPTION FEE POLICY

New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, we set a fee that will ultimately help each horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means we cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.

Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses each horse’s history and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.

While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for each horse after adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront, he or she will have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for a horse.
