Description
“Moxy” is a sweet, easy-going mare looking for the opportunity to be a fun prospect for the right person!
Moxy retired from her track career sound, just no longer competitive. We gave her extra time for R&R when she came into our program, as she had some stiff muscles and sore joints (typical after an active career), but she is now back in work looking better than ever! In turnout Moxy is a mid-pack lady. She can run with the toughest of them, but she doesn't compete for a top spot. When she was in 24/7 turnout, she even liked to share a grain bucket with her buddy, Naggedy Ann (happily shared together!). Moxy was super easy to take pictures of because she is happy to stand still—whether to pose for a picture or for the vet/ farrier. She is also a very friendly, easy-going horse around the barn and an easy handle on the ground.
Moxy has been ridden in both Western and English tack, and she plays the role well in both 'costumes!' She is a very straightforward ride, with an eager-to-please attitude and just the right amount of whoa and go. She can feel a little quick when she first gets started and could intimidate a rider that doesn't have doesn't an independent seat and hand. Moxy could be a great horse for an advanced intermediate rider wanting to do low-level ring work, trails, ranch work, or any number of other career paths!

ADOPTION FEE POLICY
New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, we set a fee that will ultimately help each horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means we cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $500, $1,000 or $2,500.
- $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or the unicorn horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations, have great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example cleared for 2’6” but not 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from a race injury but have been cleared for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses each horse’s history and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.
While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for each horse after adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront, he or she will have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
