2025 RRP Thoroughbred Makeover Eligible

• Leading and Ground Manners - Level 1-2 - Frodo leads around the farm day to day in a plain halter and lead. In a new or exciting environment, he can be a little pushy so his adopter may want a rope halter or chain shank.
• Grooming and Tacking - Level 2 - Frodo is just learning to stand in the crossties so does stay supervised. He is standing better each day but can startle if his rider/handler moves around quickly such as tossing a saddle pad into his back, especially when he's settling into a new place, with new people. We take things slow with him and let him check out new things and that has helped him relax and trust us.
• Horse Care - Level 1 - Frodo lives out with a group of geldings and gets along with many different personalities. He had been able to stay barefoot in the beginning stage of his retraining but with all the rain we’ve been getting and feet getting soft, we have just added front shoes. He is going through a huge growth spurt and is quite butt high right now- during these times especially if staying in a program, he may need additional groceries to support his higher caloric needs.
• Riding - Level 1 - Frodo seems to be a lot more confident under saddle then on the ground and is very quiet. We let him wander around and check out all the jumps before getting to work and he quickly settled into his job and happily walk, trot and cantered around the ring. He is comfortable to ride, responsive to his rider’s aids and has a good work ethic. He has been in a light program while he is actively growing.
• General Demeanor - Level 2  - Frodo can be a little unconfident in new situations and will look to his handler for encouragement so a confident adopter will be the best fit. He is easily influenced by his four legged friends and will follow their lead! For example, if he’s out with a horse that can hard to catch, he will be and if he’s out with a horse that’s super friendly or super brave he will be too! When he relaxes into his new home and routine and gets to know the people around him he has a very sweet, in-your-pocket personality.
• Physical Capability - Level 3 - Frodo retired with a partially paralyzed throat and does make a small respiratory noise but that won’t affect him in his new career.

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES

New Vocations intentionally sets our horses’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbred or Standardbred from a private seller (in today’s market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at $5,000 to $10,000!).

Our fees range from $0 (waived) to $3,500.

• Fees typically correspond with a horse’s Anticipated Physical Capability. So, horses that are found to be best suited for non-riding careers (our Pasture Potatoes) have waived fees, while the fees for horses assessed to be suitable for high-impact careers will be up to $3,500.

While our adoption fees are low, it’s important to remember that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for a horse can be high. We hope that by helping adopters save money upfront, you’ll have more funds available to cover the costs of properly caring for and training a retired racehorse.

When you adopt a horse through New Vocations, you’re helping two horses; your new family member and the one who takes their place in our program. Our facilities are nearly always at max capacity, which means we can’t take in a new horse until one is adopted. Keeping our adoption fees low helps us find appropriate homes for horses quickly, enabling us to help even more horses transition off the track as stalls open up in our barns!

Another perk of adopting from us: we do all we can to give you the most value for your adoption fee. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days, during which they've rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, been evaluated by trainers and veterinarians, and have been in regular training with a professional. On average, the monetary value of these services exceeds $5,000. Any medical records (often including X-rays and ultrasounds) and pertinent history we have on each horse are also available to interested and approved adopters.
