Description
Woodmere Cecil is an amazing combination of personality, heart, and a willing partner to grow along with his new person. This handsome bay Standardbred gelding stands 15.3hh and brings an “in-your-pocket” personality that demands treats and adoration!
Cecil has a kind way about him and offers a comfortable walk and a lovely trot. He’s been enjoying trail rides with a friend and is happily learning new skills, including walking and trotting over poles and navigating indoor trail obstacles. He approaches new challenges with curiosity and try — and his amusingly quirky nature will keep you smiling. He has been ridden in the snow as well as through water and happily does whatever you ask him to do.
Turnout time is one of his favorite parts of the day. Cecil thrives in the company of a few good friends and truly enjoys being around other horses — he does not want to be by himself. In the barn, he’s attention-seeking in the sweetest way and loves being part of the action. Woodmere Cecil offers great potential for someone looking for a personable partner who enjoys connection, companionship, and continued learning. He would love to be in a home where he could be outside 24/7.
- Leading and Ground Manners - Level 1 -Cecil leads with a basic halter and lead. He can be a bit pushy in new situations.
- Grooming and Tacking - Level 1+ -Cecil loves all of the attention he can garner, and gets excited to have a job to do and is ready for it. He stands in the crossties and had plenty of practice doing so while at the track, racing 62 times.
- Horse Care - Level 1* - Cecil is barefoot and requires a normal feeding regimen with no supplements. *Cecil does like to grab his feed bucket and crib when it is feeding time. When he is turned out, we have not seen or seen evidence of him doing this. He does prefer to be outside with his friend(s) and has likely developed this habit from being in a stall.
- Riding - Level 2 - Cecil wants to please his partner in work! But he also likes to push his limits in silly ways. We have had him on trails and ridden in the arena and he is very game to do whatever. He also likes having a buddy to ride with and likes the comfort of another horse to follow on the trail. He is going to be a fancy hunter or trail horse. Could also be driven.
- General Demeanor - Level 1 - Generally, Cecil is up to learn new things. He is happy to walk along and be curious about new things, as long as he has a friend along to help show him that he doesn't have to face the strange creatures of the world by himself!
- Physical Capability - Level 1 - Cecil has no known injuries that would prevent him from being a great trail, hunter or all around family horse! With his great breeding and looks he can do almost anything.

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES
New Vocations intentionally sets our horses’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbred or Standardbred from a private seller. In today’s market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at $5,000 to $10,000!
Our fees range from $0 (waived) to $3,500. Fees typically correspond with a horse’s anticipated physical capabilities. So, horses that are best suited for non-riding careers (our Pasture Potatoes) have waived fees, while the fees for horses assessed to be suitable for high-impact careers will be up to $3,500.
While our adoption fees are low, it’s important to remember that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for a horse can be high. New Vocations hope that by helping adopters save money upfront, you’ll have more funds available to cover the costs of properly caring for and training a retired racehorse.
When you adopt a horse through New Vocations, you’re helping two horses; your new family member and the one who takes their place in our program. Our facilities are nearly always at max capacity, which means we can’t take in a new horse until one is adopted. Keeping our adoption fees low helps us find appropriate homes for horses quickly, enabling us to help even more horses transition off the track as stalls open up in our barns!
Another perk of adopting from us: We do all we can to give you the most value for your adoption fee. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days, during which they've rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, been evaluated by trainers and veterinarians, and have been in regular training with a professional. On average, the monetary value of these services exceeds $5,000. Any medical records (often including X-rays and ultrasounds) and pertinent history we have on each horse are also available to interested and approved adopters.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
