Apple Patty, or "Patty" or even "Patty cakes", is a beautiful 2015 Matron of Honor retired broodmare standing at approx 15.2 hands with both elegance and heart. After a short racing career, Patty has produced four lovely foals and carries herself with the quiet confidence of an experienced mare. Patty is appreciated in the barn for her sweet disposition and kind nature. She’s the type of horse that quickly becomes a favorite in the barn thanks to her lovely personality and striking looks. With her beautiful coat and soft expression, she turns heads while also being a pleasure to work with. An easy keeper, Patty thrives in a relaxed environment and would love a home where she can enjoy a quiet life with a couple of close pasture friends. She is simple to handle on the ground and under saddle, making her a straightforward and enjoyable partner for someone looking for a calm, uncomplicated mare. Like many sensitive horses (especially with her longer, glorious winter coat), she prefers a gentle approach when tightening the girth, but otherwise she is easygoing and cooperative in her daily handling. Apple Patty would be a wonderful addition to a home looking for a kind, beautiful mare to enjoy and cherish. Whether spending quiet days in the pasture or light riding time with her person, she’s ready to bring warmth and smiles to her next chapter.

• Leading and Ground Manners - Level 1 - Patty leads with a simple halter and lead.
• Grooming and Tacking - Level 1 - Patty is a lady waiting to be doted on. And even better if you bring treats!
• Horse Care - Level 1 - Patty is barefoot and on ration balancer and grass hay
• Riding - Level 1- Patty has taken to riding in a basic snaffle and has been wonderful with saddle or bareback pad
• General Demeanor - Level 1 - Patty is a sweet girl who just wants to be adored and treasured. She is uncomplicated with her herd of mares. She would be an excellent babysitter and really enjoys attention and having a job!
• Physical Capability - Level 1 - Patty has no known racing injuries. As a broodmare, she was sent to New Vocations due to a complicated birth in 2025. She ruptured the tendon that runs under belly, which can happen to a broodmare. She has seen two veterinarians that have cleared her for light riding. She really enjoys the attention and having a purpose! She has so far enjoyed her limited trails on the property, and is learning how to do basic walking obstacles in the arena.

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES

New Vocations intentionally sets our horses’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbred or Standardbred from a private seller. In today’s market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at $5,000 to $10,000!

Our fees range from $0 (waived) to $3,500. Fees typically correspond with a horse’s anticipated physical capabilities. So, horses that are best suited for non-riding careers (our Pasture Potatoes) have waived fees, while the fees for horses assessed to be suitable for high-impact careers will be up to $3,500.

While our adoption fees are low, it’s important to remember that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for a horse can be high. New Vocations hope that by helping adopters save money upfront, you’ll have more funds available to cover the costs of properly caring for and training a retired racehorse.

When you adopt a horse through New Vocations, you’re helping two horses; your new family member and the one who takes their place in our program. Our facilities are nearly always at max capacity, which means we can’t take in a new horse until one is adopted. Keeping our adoption fees low helps us find appropriate homes for horses quickly, enabling us to help even more horses transition off the track as stalls open up in our barns!

Another perk of adopting from us: We do all we can to give you the most value for your adoption fee. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days, during which they've rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, been evaluated by trainers and veterinarians, and have been in regular training with a professional. On average, the monetary value of these services exceeds $5,000. Any medical records (often including X-rays and ultrasounds) and pertinent history we have on each horse are also available to interested and approved adopters.
