Description
Calida is a lovely, sweet‑natured 16hh chestnut mare by Declaration of War out of Testa Rossi. We adopted her in early 2021 as a companion mare when we moved to our farm, and she has been an absolute pleasure to have ever since.
During her time with us, Calida produced a beautiful foal and proved to be an exceptional, gentle mother. She has also gone to several local shows where she handled the atmosphere with ease and showed her willing, uncomplicated temperament.
Calida is an incredibly kind mare who enjoys attention and thrives in a calm, routine environment. She has no vices, is easy to handle, and gets along wonderfully with other horses.
The only reason she is available is due to South Florida’s increasingly harsh summers, which have not been kind to her sweet itch. She is happiest and most comfortable in a cooler, less tropical climate with fewer bugs, and we want to place her where she can truly thrive.
Calida would be a wonderful fit for someone seeking a sweet companion, broodmare, or light riding partner in a more temperate region.
We adore her and are committed to finding the perfect home where she can shine.
Calida has a naturally forward, efficient way of going that makes her well‑suited for riders who enjoy covering ground and maintaining a steady rhythm. She’s intelligent, willing, and enjoys having a purpose—traits that translate beautifully to conditioning rides, longer outings, and varied terrain. She is attentive to her rider, responsive without being overly sensitive, and maintains a positive work ethic throughout a ride. Calida settles into a consistent pace, enjoys exploring new routes, and shows the kind of mental endurance that makes distance riding enjoyable rather than exhausting. With her easygoing nature and desire to stay moving, she’s a wonderful partner for someone looking to develop a fun, reliable light‑distance or introductory endurance horse.
- Leading and Ground Manners - Level 1 - Calida is extremely easy to catch in the field and brings herselfin with a calm, pleasant demeanor. She leads quietly, respects your space, and remains relaced in new environments.
- Grooming & Tacking – Level 1- She is a dream on the crossties—stands quietly for as long as needed and genuinely enjoys the attention. Calida clips easily (ears, bridle path, muzzle) and while we’ve never needed to body clip her, her temperament suggests she would handle it without issue.
- Horse Care – Level 2 - Currently barefoot and comfortable for light work. With more consistent riding, she would benefit from front shoes or trail boots (she wears boots now with no fuss). Her diet is simple: grain‑free feed, free‑choice hay, and a daily multivitamin. No management quirks. If remaining in a southern or tropical climate, Calida will need routine sweet‑itch management—regular fly protection, a lightweight fly sheet, and topical treatments during peak insect season keep her comfortable. In cooler or less buggy regions, her sweet itch is far easier to manage.
- Riding – Level 2 -Calida is very well‑mannered at the walk and trot and enjoys having a job. At the canter she can become a bit strong, so an intermediate rider would help her stay balanced and relaxed. She’s willing, intelligent, and tries hard to please.
- General Demeanor – Level 1- Truly a steady, reliable mare—practically bombproof. She does not overreact and stays level‑headed in new situations.
- Physical Capability – Level 2- She does well with moderate work and has no known limiting injuries. She performs best in consistent work with front shoes for added comfort. Great candidate for light riding, flatwork, trails, or broodmare duties.

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES
New Vocations intentionally sets our horses’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbred or Standardbred from a private seller. In today’s market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at $5,000 to $10,000!
Our fees range from $0 (waived) to $3,500. Fees typically correspond with a horse’s anticipated physical capabilities. So, horses that are best suited for non-riding careers (our Pasture Potatoes) have waived fees, while the fees for horses assessed to be suitable for high-impact careers will be up to $3,500.
While our adoption fees are low, it’s important to remember that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for a horse can be high. New Vocations hope that by helping adopters save money upfront, you’ll have more funds available to cover the costs of properly caring for and training a retired racehorse.
When you adopt a horse through New Vocations, you’re helping two horses; your new family member and the one who takes their place in our program. Our facilities are nearly always at max capacity, which means we can’t take in a new horse until one is adopted. Keeping our adoption fees low helps us find appropriate homes for horses quickly, enabling us to help even more horses transition off the track as stalls open up in our barns!
Another perk of adopting from us: We do all we can to give you the most value for your adoption fee. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days, during which they've rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, been evaluated by trainers and veterinarians, and have been in regular training with a professional. On average, the monetary value of these services exceeds $5,000. Any medical records (often including X-rays and ultrasounds) and pertinent history we have on each horse are also available to interested and approved adopters.
