Description

Bad Little Beast, the best big boy to have in your stable! He is a true gentleman who has excellent manners on the ground and under tack. He is able to ride with various groups of horses as well as by himself. So far, he has been consistent in any environment and is eager to please his rider. He enjoys spending quality time with his person, whether that’s out on the trail, training in the arena, or just being groomed in the crossties.

  • Leading and Ground Manners - Level 1 - Beast is respectful of a handler and happy to walk along wherever he is asked. He is quiet and can be handled with a cotton lead.
  • Grooming and Tacking - Level 1 - Beast stands quietly for grooming and tacking, does not bite or offer to kick when grooming or cinching. Cross ties quietly. Good to lift his hooves and quiet for a bath. He may show you his impressively long tongue however if he deems standing in crossties boring!
  • Horse Care - Level 2 - Beast may require some additional calories compared to the average OTTB as he is on his bulking journey. He may also appreciate a joint supplement for regular work. He is shod in the front, barefoot behind (for more moderate ridden work, hind shoes may be considered). He also wears hind bell boots in turnout to protect his pasterns from interference.
  • Riding - Level 1 -  Beast is a luxury to ride, with big smooths gaits that will only get nicer with regular work! He is laid back and willing, the very “stereotypical gelding”. Beast has even given a few riding lessons, happily ridden by a teenager and adult amateur. With weight gain he may become more energetic, but we expect his willing demeanor to remain the same.
  • General Demeanor - Level 1 - Beast is overall lovely. He is laid back, respectful of your space, and wants to engage. He is not overly reactive to his environment. He is lower on the totem pole in herd turnout, but did warm up to friends after a few weeks. He does not have vices.
  • Physical Capability - Level 1 - Beast does have wear and tear from his racing career, so he is not looking for an upper level second career. He would make a lovely pleasure or trail mount. He may also be a wonderful addition to an intermediate/advanced lesson program.

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES

New Vocations intentionally sets our horses’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbred or Standardbred from a private seller. In today’s market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at $5,000 to $10,000!

Our fees range from $0 (waived) to $3,500. Fees typically correspond with a horse’s anticipated physical capabilities. So, horses that are best suited for non-riding careers (our Pasture Potatoes) have waived fees, while the fees for horses assessed to be suitable for high-impact careers will be up to $3,500.

While our adoption fees are low, it’s important to remember that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for a horse can be high. New Vocations hope that by helping adopters save money upfront, you’ll have more funds available to cover the costs of properly caring for and training a retired racehorse.

When you adopt a horse through New Vocations, you’re helping two horses; your new family member and the one who takes their place in our program. Our facilities are nearly always at max capacity, which means we can’t take in a new horse until one is adopted. Keeping our adoption fees low helps us find appropriate homes for horses quickly, enabling us to help even more horses transition off the track as stalls open up in our barns!

Another perk of adopting from us: We do all we can to give you the most value for your adoption fee. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days, during which they've rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, been evaluated by trainers and veterinarians, and have been in regular training with a professional. On average, the monetary value of these services exceeds $5,000. Any medical records (often including X-rays and ultrasounds) and pertinent history we have on each horse are also available to interested and approved adopters.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program

New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.

Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes.  With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
