Description
Religulous (Reggie) is a big built, taller mare with an even bigger heart! This mare craves attention and an easy- going job. A wonderful life filled with successes, it is easy to see why in her third career all the riders at the barn enjoy time with her. She won nearly $130 in 25 races, then turned around and produced 10 foals between 2011 and 2025. When this mare came off the trailer, she did so with the quiet, confident experience that she exudes each and every day with her trainer. Reggie has been nothing less than stellar since her first ride, and has shown a quiet, relaxation in her purposeful and swinging walk stride. She has been both saddled and ridden with just a saddle pad all over the farm, and enjoys her hackamore setup. This mare would be dependable for most family situations where the riders might be less experienced, but wanting to go out for a small group ride together. She has a quiet and gentle nature in general, and loves to lean her head in for her brushing time, or help get the underside of her neck and belling scratched (silly bugs are so annoying!) Reggie walks and trots under saddle, and does best (most relaxed!) in more outdoor settings.
- Leading and Ground Manners - Level 1 - Reggie leads easily with a plain halter and lead rope
- Grooming and Tacking - Level 1 - Reggie is wonderful with her one-on-one grooming and attention time. She is still working through some emotions when the girth is tightened, but let’s be honest- what girl “enjoys” getting a tight belt on?
- Horse Care - Level 1 - Reggie is barefoot and is one ration balancer, grass mix hay, and overnight pasture.
- Riding - Level 1 - Reggie is calm, quiet, and a willing gal under saddle. She has been this way since the first day, and continues to be the same horse no matter who rides her. She enjoys a swinging, slow walk the most
- General Demeanor - Level 1 - Reggie is a pleasure to everyone! She is careful and sweet to all the barn staff, caregivers, riders, and handlers alike.
- Physical Capability - Level 1 - Reggie has very much retired from the “need for speed” aspect of her life, but enjoys moving and going out to enjoy time with her people. She can be a little stiff in the hind end the warming up to ride, but is great to go after she’s been warmed up for a bit. She can get a little more “active” is encouraged by her rider, but never wants to be too much. A little off balance? No problem- we’ll bring it back to a walk so we are both more comfortable!

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES
New Vocations intentionally sets our horses’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbred or Standardbred from a private seller. In today’s market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at $5,000 to $10,000!
Our fees range from $0 (waived) to $3,500. Fees typically correspond with a horse’s anticipated physical capabilities. So, horses that are best suited for non-riding careers (our Pasture Potatoes) have waived fees, while the fees for horses assessed to be suitable for high-impact careers will be up to $3,500.
While our adoption fees are low, it’s important to remember that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for a horse can be high. New Vocations hope that by helping adopters save money upfront, you’ll have more funds available to cover the costs of properly caring for and training a retired racehorse.
When you adopt a horse through New Vocations, you’re helping two horses; your new family member and the one who takes their place in our program. Our facilities are nearly always at max capacity, which means we can’t take in a new horse until one is adopted. Keeping our adoption fees low helps us find appropriate homes for horses quickly, enabling us to help even more horses transition off the track as stalls open up in our barns!
Another perk of adopting from us: We do all we can to give you the most value for your adoption fee. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days, during which they've rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, been evaluated by trainers and veterinarians, and have been in regular training with a professional. On average, the monetary value of these services exceeds $5,000. Any medical records (often including X-rays and ultrasounds) and pertinent history we have on each horse are also available to interested and approved adopters.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
