Description
Just look at his guy, need we say anymore?! Dancin in the Rain is one who you won’t come by too often! Not only is this big, handsome guy an eye catcher, but he’s well versed in his career because he ran on both flat tracks and steeplechase. He even gets better when you see how easy to handle he is on the ground. Clearly we can’t say enough about “Rainman”!
Rainman has been thrown into a variety of turnout situations and never strays from his easy-going personality. He is definitely more of a submissive in his field of buddies and prefers to spend his time snacking and not spending his energy playing. At the end of the day he likes to stick his head out of his stall, take in his surroundings and maybe nap on your shoulder.
While he is grey, and therefore a magnet for dirt, he is happy to stand on the crossties quietly while being groomed, bathed or generally tidied up. He also very much enjoys being loved on, and has the disposition of a friendly giant. He is very curious and kind to ‘little things,’ like dogs, kids, cats, etc., so we could see that working to his advantage in a number of different disciplines/ career paths down the road.
Rainman has sustained tendon injuries in both front legs over the last 2 years, but they were treated aggressively with stem cells and shockwave therapy. He is currently rehabbing from a right front tendon injury that occurred earlier this year. Now, he is walking with a little trotting under saddle, even adding in some light pole work. Rainman is looking for a home with someone who will continue to bring him along slowly (and no jumping until 2021) with his rehab rides, so he can be set up for the best future possible! He has an awesome, ‘unflappable’ mindset under saddle though, which makes him great in any new situation, including on trails! Rainman is super comfy to ride as well, but he can sometimes have a bubbly kind of energy to him, so he would do best with an experienced rider who is not intimidated by his enthusiasm and size combined! We could see him doing pretty much any career, but he certainly strikes us as having what it takes to be an awesome foxhunter prospect or low hunters.
ADOPTION FEE POLICY
New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, we set a fee that will ultimately help each horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means we cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $500, $1,000 or $1,000 with a $1,500 donation.
- $1,000 with a $1,500 donation: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or the unicorn horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations, have great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example cleared for 2’6” but not 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from a race injury but have been cleared for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses each horse’s history and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.
While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for each horse after adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront, he or she will have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for a horse.
