Description
Meet “Starmy,” a sweet filly who instantly draws you in with her kind eye and attractive face. She's a beautifully-built and kind girl who is so deserving of a forever home!
In turnout, Starmy sits happily at the top of the pecking order, but she isn’t herd bound and keeps her composure even when friends aren’t in the stall right next to her. She is very easy to lead in and out; she even leads two at a time! In the crossties, Starmy's patience has improved, but she still occasionally paws if she feels like she’s not being properly attended to. If Starmy has clear ground rules, she happily obliges and does not push for an argument. She has no stall vices.
Our chiropractor noticed that she had tension in a spot on her back. X-rays revealed a couple spots of kissing spines, which our veterinarian injected so she is comfortable during work. When worked properly, she will develop carriage, which will help create space and proper extension and hopefully prevent further damage. The location of the kissing spines is such that the saddle panels sit over—not on it—so she is not irritated by or uncomfortable being ridden!
At the beginning of 2020 Starmy fractured her right hind sesamoid. Unfortunately, recent x-rays show that the chip has dislocated, which will limit her to a companion or light trail/pleasure riding career. The good news is that Starmy is a very straightforward and enjoyable ride—very eager and brave with a great attitude towards working!
- Leading and Ground Manners - Level 1
- Grooming and Tacking - Level 2
- Horse Care - Level 1 - She is currently barefoot but may require shoes when she's in more consistent work.
- Riding - Level 2
- General Demeanor - Level 2 - Starmy is generally mild mannered, but she's shown some food dominance in previous situations. As such, she does best in situations where there's another alpha to keep her modest!

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES
We intentionally set New Vocations’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds from a private seller (in today's market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at a price between $2,000 and $5,000!). Our facilities are always at full capacity, which means we can't take in an additional horse until one is adopted; a lower adoption fee means horses are more likely to find appropriate homes quickly and we can welcome more horses into our barns. And just think: By adopting one horse through New Vocations, you're actually helping two horses (you new family member and the one who takes his place in our program) transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $2,500, $1,000, $500 or waived:
- $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or “unicorn” horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations and great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example, cleared for 2’6” but not necessarily 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from an injury but have been cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion-type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
- Waived: This is for horses that have significant limitations for a riding career or are otherwise difficult to place. These horses are otherwise healthy and have been evaluated by a veterinarian.
Another perk of adopting from us? We do our best to give you the best bang for your buck. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days, during which they're rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. We're also happy to share the history and any medical records (often including X-ray and ultrasounds) we have on each horse with interested and approved adopters.
While our adoption fees are low, please remember that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for a horse (adopted or otherwise!) can be high. We hope that by helping an adopter save money upfront, you'll have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for and training a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
