Statesboro

2027 RRP Thoroughbred Makeover Eligible

States may be a plain bay gelding, but his personality is anything but plain! A true war horse, he is the type of guy who enjoys working and likes to have a job. He is able to work inside or outside and with or without a buddy. With a long race career under his belt, he is very bridle wise and knows what the job is. He is excited to find a new career in any direction, but most importantly is excited to find a person to perform his new job with. In the herd he makes friends easily and is not dominant. He is turned out with geldings of various ages and personality and fits right in.

• Leading and Ground Manners - Level 1 - Statesboro is quiet to lead around the farm with a cotton lead rope. He is not pushy and respects his handlers requests and personal space.
• Grooming and Tacking - Level 1+ - He is able to stand in the crossties and easy to handle for grooming, farrier care, vet work, etc. He does best in a quiet environment as he can feed off what is happening around him and may get excitable if left to his own devices, but is always looking to his handler for guidance.
• Horse Care - Level 2 - States is currently in front shoes. He does have a contracted heel that may require additional farrier care and shoeing for upper level prospects, however in his restart he is doing fine and maintaining with basic steel shoes. He does have a history of ulcers and would benefit from a feeding routine/ care with long term gut support.
• Riding - Level 1 - He is straightforward with riding. From time to time he does need encouragement to go over or around a new obstacle, but he does not take long to catch on. He appreciates a longer warmup and is game for what the rider has planned.
• General Demeanor - Level 2 - Statesboro is sweet and wants to do the right thing. He is adapting to life off the track with a great no nonsense attitude, but sometime requires his handler to slow down and reset. He is a cribber and can be a bit anxious in his stall around feeding time, but non-aggressive. States does not have a mean bone in his body.
• Physical Capability - Level 2+ - States retired sound with no injuries and is ready for his next career. As he gains weight and muscle we anticipate he’ll be able to perform a career with moderate impact with no complications.

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES

New Vocations intentionally sets our horses’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbred or Standardbred from a private seller. In today’s market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at $5,000 to $10,000!

Our fees range from $0 (waived) to $3,500. Fees typically correspond with a horse’s anticipated physical capabilities. So, horses that are best suited for non-riding careers (our Pasture Potatoes) have waived fees, while the fees for horses assessed to be suitable for high-impact careers will be up to $3,500.

While our adoption fees are low, it’s important to remember that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for a horse can be high. New Vocations hope that by helping adopters save money upfront, you’ll have more funds available to cover the costs of properly caring for and training a retired racehorse.

When you adopt a horse through New Vocations, you’re helping two horses; your new family member and the one who takes their place in our program. Our facilities are nearly always at max capacity, which means we can’t take in a new horse until one is adopted. Keeping our adoption fees low helps us find appropriate homes for horses quickly, enabling us to help even more horses transition off the track as stalls open up in our barns!

Another perk of adopting from us: We do all we can to give you the most value for your adoption fee. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days, during which they've rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, been evaluated by trainers and veterinarians, and have been in regular training with a professional. On average, the monetary value of these services exceeds $5,000. Any medical records (often including X-rays and ultrasounds) and pertinent history we have on each horse are also available to interested and approved adopters.
