Description
Queen Kimberly certainly knows she is the queen! This Freud mare had only two starts before her connections realized racing was not for her and she retired with no restrictions for her second career! “Queen” prefers to bond with one person and enjoys being fussed over by her person. The fastest way to her heart is definitely through some treats!
On the ground, Queen is easy to handle. She leads quietly both to and from the paddock. Queen is currently turned out with three other young mares at night and enjoys the time outside of her stall! She stands on cross ties and is patient to get tacked up. She absolutely loves drinking out of the hose!
Queen has been let down and lightly restarted. At only 3 years old, she has a solid understanding of the basics under saddle. She stands well at the mounting block and has been ridden both inside and outside. Whether being ridden alone or in group, Queen is quiet under saddle. She getting used to contact and will need someone who is willing to work with her to learn to stretch down, bend, and build her top line.
She is well-balanced at all three gaits and easily picks up both leads. She also walks on a loose rein around the property and on a trail without a problem! Her perfect home would be with someone who is willing to get to know her and where both Queen and her new partner can take their time and grow together. With no restrictions, we could see Queen as a hunter prospect, however she can be finished any direction.
Queen Kimberly came to New Vocations via the NYTHA Take the Lead program. We're grateful for their continued support!
ADOPTION FEE POLICY
New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, we set a fee that will ultimately help each horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means we cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $500, $1,000 or $2,500:
- $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or the unicorn horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations, have great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example cleared for 2’6” but not 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from a race injury but have been cleared for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses each horse’s history and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.
While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for each horse after adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront, he or she will have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
