Description
Curlin’s Legacy, or Curlin as we call him around the barn, may share his superstar sire’s name, but he did not inherit the same racing prowess. There is no mistaking his lineage, however, based on his name and striking resemblance! After 16 starts (including a win at nearby Saratoga) and approximately $50,000 in earnings his racing connections saw his heart was no longer in it.
Curlin is easygoing on the ground and quickly adjusted to post track life. He leads in and out of the paddock well, crossties, and enjoys a good bath. Curlin is currently turned out alone, however we could easily see him going out with other young, playful geldings.
Under saddle, Curlin is a straightforward ride that has more whoa than go. He has been ridden both inside and outside, as well as alone and in a group. Curlin comes out the same if it’s quiet or busy! He is currently working on stretching down and building muscles that will help him stretch through his top line. We could see Curlin excelling in many disciplines - from eventing to dressage to fox hunting and anything in between. He is brave and a quick study and will only continue to impress. Curlin’s Legacy retired sound without injury. He is a mild cribber. We do not have a collar on him as it’s only been seen at feeding time on his grain bucket.
Curlin's Legacy came to New Vocations via the NYTHA Take the Lead program. We're grateful for their continued support!
ADOPTION FEE POLICY
New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, we set a fee that will ultimately help each horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means we cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $500, $1,000 or $2,500:
- $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or the unicorn horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations, have great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example cleared for 2’6” but not 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from a race injury but have been cleared for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses each horse’s history and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.
While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for each horse after adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront, he or she will have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
