Description
Senet is a 3-year-old gelding who is full of personality! He earned his nickname “Senator” from his brave and resilient character. You would never guess his young age from how he has quickly become the head of the table when he is out in turnout with his three other buddies. If Senet isn’t sticking his head out to check out the daily activity, he’s playfully calling to his friend’s or quietly eating his hay. Senet can be a bit picky about who he lets into his circle of friends, but he’s shown improvements with his maturity and has relaxed from the role as sometimes a bully to the new guys. As some babies are, he can be a little impatient while standing for the vet and farrier. He’s learning that his new role comes with patience and is starting to respect his handler. One of his favorite things to do is to help fill up his own water buckets and also give you some great company as you’re cleaning up his house! Senet came to us with some history of changes in his right front knee and his right hind fetlock joint. Since being with us, our team has identified some suspensory ligament irregularities in his left hind leg, so he has had some time off to start the healing process.
We think Sent will make a fantastic low-level prospect in any number of different disciplines with time! He will require an advanced, experienced rider, at least until he is more mature and has more miles under his belt!
ADOPTION FEE POLICY
New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, we set a fee that will ultimately help each horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means we cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $500, $1,000 or $2,500:
- $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or “unicorn” horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations and great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example, cleared for 2’6” but not necessarily 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from an injury but have been cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion-type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses each horse’s history and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.
While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for each horse after adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront, he or she will have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
