Description
“Posey” is a 2018 graduate of New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program and was adopted by her trainer at the Xenia facility before even making it to the public eye!
Posey loves everyone she's ever met—horse and human alike—and she has a friendly and kind personality and enjoys bonding with her person. She gets along great with other horses (she's turned out with mares) and was referred to as the “field mom” at the Xenia facility for welcoming and introducing new girls to the group. She’s known to reach out over her stall guard and nuzzle anyone within reach.
Posey was restarted towards eventing and has been a willing participant in a professional program since adoption. She spent her first year with us learning the basics of eventing with Xenia’s head girl. She has completed local mini-trials and eventing derbies at the starter level and is schooling beginner novice dressage and jump courses. She has ability and athleticism to spare!
Currently, Posey is teaching upper-intermediate lessons on the flat and being ridden by her trainer, working a few days per week. Her preferred work seems to be hacking through fields and jumping in the arena. She’s also perfectly fine with just getting a few pats and a handful of treats! While sensible and sane, she's a forward and strong ride and will do best with an experienced, competent partner. Posey can continue in performance disciplines, could be a fun hunting or trail riding partner, or would be quite content to just keep another horse company at home. Posey isn’t particular about her job, just wants someone to love and understand her!
Posey retired from racing in 2016 after earning $55k at the track and went home with her breeder to relax before coming to New Vocations. She was very well cared for during her racing days and retired perfectly sound with no injuries or limitations. She has a super sweet personality and is low maintenance and a pleasure to have in the barn with good manners and no vices. She passed a PPE in the Spring and is up to date on everything. She just needs her new best friend to continue her career in whatever direction she's pointed!
Posey is located in Moraine, OH, just outside of Dayton.

ADOPTION FEE POLICY
New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, we set a fee that will ultimately help each horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means we cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $500, $1,000 or $2,500:
- $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or “unicorn” horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations and great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example, cleared for 2’6” but not necessarily 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from an injury but have been cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion-type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses each horse’s history and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.
While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for each horse after adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront, he or she will have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
