Description
Super Market is a handsome, kind 16-year-old gelding standing 15.3 hands. He's had a quiet life for the past few years, hanging out as a pampered pasture puff since his owner was injured at work in 2015. He was turned out with an elderly Tennessee Walker gelding for years and did well, though he was the “boss” horse. After his pasturemate passed, he's been pastured alone (other than barn cats!) and has still appeared to still be the same usually kind and happy guy he has always been.
Before his owner’s injury that forced her riding retirement, he was a bit lazy when riding at home. He's easy to mount with the mounting block and quiet to ride in the outdoor arena. Away from home, he gets more excitable on the trailer and while working, but he was good during cross-country lessons from a well-known eventer. His adopter thinks that, at first, he'll need at least an intermediate rider with an instructor, but he could settle once he's back in work
On the ground, he likes to be groomed and fussed over. He seems to enjoy having his beautiful ears stroked while he eats his grain ("Oh, and I am sure to tell him he is sweet, beautiful boy while stroking his ears!" his adopter says!). He his easy to vaccinate; needles are no issue here! He normally stands quietly for hoof trimming and has been barefoot since 2015.
His difficult areas can include paste worming, tying and trailer loading, however his adopter says that, the more he is handled, the easier these things become for him.
He has no known limitations and is looking for his next partner to get back to work with!
Super Market is located in Indianapolis, IN.

ADOPTION FEE POLICY
New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, we set a fee that will ultimately help each horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means we cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $2,500, $1,000, $500 or waived:
- $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or “unicorn” horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations and great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example, cleared for 2’6” but not necessarily 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from an injury but have been cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion-type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
- Waived: This is for horses that have significant limitations for a riding career or are otherwise difficult to place. These horses are otherwise healthy and have been evaluated by a veterinarian.
Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses each horse’s history and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.
While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for each horse after adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront, he or she will have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
