Description

Cashendash Hanover is the epitome of a war horse! He was a fantastic racehorse for many people and earned over $600,000 in 285 starts. So when he unfortuately found his way to a sale, his racing connections went out of there way to get secure and rehab him before sending him to New Vocations to find a second career. We've absolutely loved giving this professional a place to transtition and learn to be a riding horse!

“Cash” is a super sweet guy with big, kind, eyes and full of wisdom. He took to riding very easily and would be suitable for most riders. Cash came to us with some wear and tear in a big left front knee; it is hard and set. When he paces under saddle he's been stiff, but as he's been turned out and moving around more, he's getting better. Still, we feel he is best suited as a walk and companion horse. He will go anywhere you ask him and he's not spooky or jumpy ... just a kind soul who'd be a perfect partner for a rider who appreciates mosying along.

Cash is the barn favorite, he's incredibly easy to be around and all of the the student riders love spending time snuggling with him in his stall. He loves the attention! He's currently going out with a group of geldings and is a super pasturemate. Since he is still gaining weight, we recommend he continue to eat his grain in his stall twice a day to make sure he is getting the nutrition he needs.

If you are looking for a handsome guy to love on and enjoy, lead the grandkids on or take on quiet trail rides, Cash is the one! His racing connections have made it very clear that he'll always have a home with them, but they wanted to give another rider or caretaker the opportunity to enjoy this super star and all he has to offer!

ADOPTION FEE POLICY

New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, we set a fee that will ultimately help each horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means we cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.

In general, our fees are set at $2,500, $1,000, $500 or waived:

  • $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or “unicorn” horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations and great conformation, movement and size.
  • $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example, cleared for 2’6” but not necessarily 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from an injury but have been cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines.
  • $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion-type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
  • Waived: This is for horses that have significant limitations for a riding career or are otherwise difficult to place. These horses are otherwise healthy and have been evaluated by a veterinarian.

Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses each horse’s history and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.

While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for each horse after adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront, he or she will have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program

New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.

Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes.  With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
