Description
Okay, she's a little chunky ... but her name really is Here's Fat!
“Posey” (her preferred moniker!) has a sweet, easy going personality and loves attention and grooming. She'll just rest her head on you and snuggle all day! Whether she's with the farrier, vet, chiropractor or anyone, for that matter, her behavior is always the same: quiet, affectionate and eager to please (just look at her St. Patrick's Day photos ... balloons are zero problem for this easy-going girl!). She turns out easily with others and has, in the past, lived out successfully.
Posey's story is unique. She was previously adopted by one of our very own New Vocations trainers and even participated in her lesson program. She's been off the property and to events and cross-country schooling (we have lots of video of her previous experience!). When the trainer shifted gears, Posey was adopted as a NV Grad, but it wasn't a perfect fit, so she came back to New Vocations to find her next partner.
A classy athlete, Posey likes a ride with contact. She does best with a confident educated rider who can help support her in canter and appreciates a forward horse with a great affinity to work. She is a brave ride and loves to jump!
Posey is still rebuilding some muscle and is becoming much more fit. She does make some respiratory noise under saddle, but it doesn't seem to impact her performance.
- Leading and Ground Manners - Level 1 - Less experienced handlers can lead Posey with no trouble!
- Grooming and Tacking - Level 1
- Horse Care - Level 1 - Posey is barefoot and requires nothing extra but does benefit from chiropractic work.
- Riding - Level 3 - Posey has all the buttons and we wouldn't recommend her for an inexperienced rider. She is sensitive to aids under saddle and needs a rider who can held hold her together.
- General Demeanor - Level 1
- Horse Physical Capability - Level 4 - Although Posey's conformation isn't perfect (she toes in mildly and paddles), she's had experience and been sound jumping up to 2'9" in and out of the arena.

ADOPTION FEE POLICY
New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, we set a fee that will ultimately help each horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means we cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $2,500, $1,000, $500 or waived:
- $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or “unicorn” horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations and great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example, cleared for 2’6” but not necessarily 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from an injury but have been cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion-type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
- Waived: This is for horses that have significant limitations for a riding career or are otherwise difficult to place. These horses are otherwise healthy and have been evaluated by a veterinarian.
Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses each horse’s history and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.
While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for each horse after adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront, he or she will have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
