Description
Meet Kadar! He is a tall, dark and handsome gelding looking for his forever home, what more could you ask for? He draws you in with his kind eye and is always looking for attention! Do you love the goof ball personalities or perhaps a horse who thinks he is a dog? Kadar might be the horse for you!
On the ground, Kadar is a simple guy. He leads well, and is a gentleman even when he is being led two at a time with another buddy by his side. He can be a bit picky when it comes to turnout, enjoying to get outside and be outside of his stall, but then waiting at the gate as though he’s ready to come inside soon after he’s turned out. He can’t decide where he wants to be! He might do well in a setup with a run-in option for that reason. One thing is for sure though, Kadar would love to be anywhere you are! He is very personable and curious with an in-your-pocket type personality, but he never shows any aggression. Kadar stands well in the cross ties, as well as for the vet and farrier.
Under saddle, Kadar is a pretty straightforward ride. Since his first ride, he has continued to develop his topline and softness through the bit progressively! He does benefit from guidance and patience from his rider so that he can clearly understand his job, but he shows a tremendous amount of talent and focus, even for his age and despite how goofy and unfocused he can be on the ground at times! This is a horse who enjoys having a job!.
Kadar retired from racing with a right front condylar fracture and a left front superficial digital flexor tendon injury, both of which were very recently rechecked and deemed to be fully healed by our vet! Kadar is slowly being introduced back into work and getting fit again, but he is doing great in this process! He will do best in a home where he can continue to increase his workload slowly, but with the right setup and training, there’s no telling what he might be able to accomplish!

ADOPTION FEE POLICY
New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, we set a fee that will ultimately help each horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means we cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $2,500, $1,000, $500 or waived:
- $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or “unicorn” horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations and great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example, cleared for 2’6” but not necessarily 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from an injury but have been cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion-type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
- Waived: This is for horses that have significant limitations for a riding career or are otherwise difficult to place. These horses are otherwise healthy and have been evaluated by a veterinarian.
Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses each horse’s history and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.
While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for each horse after adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront, he or she will have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for a horse.

New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
