Description

There's nothing scary about Scary Situation! “Scary” had a run in with a fence post as a 2-year-old that left him with a heck of a cosmetic scar, but we think it just adds to his character!

This easy-going guy is easy to be around and loves attention. He is happy to be groomed, bathed and rubbed all over! Scary is a playful guy in turn out, he likes his boy gang to play a game of halt tag with or trot up the field to investigate something interesting.

Under saddle, Scary is happy to walk around on the buckle. We can see him hitting the trails with confidence and a brave, can-do attitude. In the arena he’s happy to work and has comfortable gaits. He’s a forward thinker and likes to work. He’s learning balance, but he's just a big boy figuring it all out!

Scary entered race training, but suffered a tendon injury in winter of 2020 and never made a start. He's recovered well and is ready to shine in a second career!

Scary came to New Vocations via the NYTHA Take the Lead Program. We're so grateful for their continued support!

  • Leading and Grooming - Level 2 - Scary is easy to work around. If left in due to weather we do put a chain on him. It’s a long walk to the paddock and he gives our horses a lot of opportunity to get excited!
  • Grooming and Tacking - Level 2 - Scary is appropriate for his age. He’s curious but not reactive. Just think of all the hands on care he received when his wound was being cared for!
  • Horse Care - Level 2 - Scary does require front shoes at this time. He was doing well barefoot but our NY clay ground is unforgiving at times and we found Scary to be happier shod.
  • Riding - Level 2
  • General Demeanor - Level 2
  • Physical Capacity - Level 3 - Scary’s scar has left him with a muscle defect. He has a lot of scar tissue which is tight around the area on his left side.

ADOPTION FEE POLICY

New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, we set a fee that will ultimately help each horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means we cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.

In general, our fees are set at $2,500, $1,000, $500 or waived:

  • $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or “unicorn” horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations and great conformation, movement and size.
  • $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example, cleared for 2’6” but not necessarily 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from an injury but have been cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines.
  • $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion-type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
  • Waived: This is for horses that have significant limitations for a riding career or are otherwise difficult to place. These horses are otherwise healthy and have been evaluated by a veterinarian.

Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses each horse’s history and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.

While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for each horse after adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront, he or she will have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program

New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.

Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes.  With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
