Description
Regal Pacing Son of Dragon Again!
Our Dragon King certainly lives up to his name, he has an air of royalty about him, and with his race record he definitely should! His lifetime earnings are nearly $700,000 and he set a track record for horses of all ages during his career! Combine all that with his classic Standardbred look, and his in-your-pocket personality, and you will certainly want this King to be part of your family!
- Leading and Ground Manners - Level 2 - Generally “Dragon King” is a giant puppy dog, and would follow you with a string around his neck, but he will sometimes rush into or out of his stall, so we just want his handlers to be prepared.
- Grooming and Tacking - Level 1 - Dragon King is a perfect gentleman in the crossties to be groomed and tacked up.
- Horse Care - Level 2 - Dragon King is currently barefoot, but he does have a history of road founder and may need shoes depending on his work load. He is not on any supplements.
- Riding - Level 1 - Dragon King is a super star under saddle, or to drive! He has been ridden and driven by children and amateurs, will trail ride alone, is road and traffic safe and unfazed by pretty much anything. He has a big step to his pace, but is happy to mosey along most of the time. Under saddle he will walk, pace and canter.
- General Demeanor - Level 1 - Dragon King is an agreeable guy who is content in almost any situation. He has no stall vices, gets along in a large group of geldings in turnout and always enjoys treats and attention. He is a barn favorite and its very easy to see why!
- Horse Physical Capability - Level 2 - Dragon King does have a history of road founder, and while he is sound for most tasks, we do not recommend him for heavy levels of physical activity such as jumping or speed events. He is currently being worked 3-4 days a week with no issues.
If you have been waiting for your King, look no further! Our Dragon King can't wait to be a part of your family.

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES
We intentionally set New Vocations’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds from a private seller (in today's market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at a price between $2,000 and $5,000!). Our facilities are always at full capacity, which means we can't take in an additional horse until one is adopted; a lower adoption fee means horses are more likely to find appropriate homes quickly and we can welcome more horses into our barns. And just think: By adopting one horse through New Vocations, you're actually helping two horses (you new family member and the one who takes his place in our program) transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $2,500, $1,000, $500 or waived:
- $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or “unicorn” horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations and great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example, cleared for 2’6” but not necessarily 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from an injury but have been cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion-type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
- Waived: This is for horses that have significant limitations for a riding career or are otherwise difficult to place. These horses are otherwise healthy and have been evaluated by a veterinarian.
Another perk of adopting from us? We do our best to give you the best bang for your buck. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days, during which they're rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. We're also happy to share the history and any medical records (often including X-ray and ultrasounds) we have on each horse with interested and approved adopters.
While our adoption fees are low, please remember that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for a horse (adopted or otherwise!) can be high. We hope that by helping an adopter save money upfront, you'll have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for and training a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
