Description

“Nobly” is the kind of horse who's sure to stand out in a crowd! At just over 17hh with a thick build (and she's still growing!) and a gorgeous gray color, you’ve got an eye-catching combo!

Nobly is exceptionally easy to handle on the ground. She is relatively unexcitable and generally has a good sense of personal space, so she’s pretty steady and reliable on the ground. She knows how to longe and is usually well-behaved, though she can throw some acrobatics in the mix if she wants to show off how athletic she is (and that's very athletic, by the way!). Ground poles are nothing new to her though she might still look at them in passing at first. She has stepped over little crossrails without much effort, as well.

In turnout, Noble tends to be the alpha. She typically makes faces at the other mares in her overnight turnout (three others go out with her at the moment) to assert her dominant position, but she doesn’t use force. Once she’s away from the gate, she usually just gets down to grazing quietly. And, while she has the boss mare attitude at times in the field, her general attitude is very tom-boyish; it's definitely not the stereotypical mare attitude.

Under saddle is where Nobly needs a more advanced horseman. Contrary to her cool-as-a-cucumber attitude on the ground, Nobly can, at times, show excitability and anxiousness that requires a very confident and patient ride. Routine and lots of patience are the keys to unlocking the potential in this mare. When she’s working with you and feeling good, she has incredible, ground-covering, smooth, uphill gaits that scream “fancy show horse.”

She previously had suspensory desmitis in her hind legs and had substantial time off to work on building her body and hoof condition, so she is now getting back into shape and the swing of things. To set her up for both mental and physical success, Nobly will do best with a rider who can handle a bit of a challenge under saddle in a quiet, confident manner and who has no agenda that would mean pushing her to meet near-term goals. With time, we can certainly see Nobly go on to be a stunning, sporty prospect in any number of different disciplines!

  • Leading and Ground Manners - Level 1
  • Grooming and Tacking - Level 2 - Nobly might paw in the crossties but is generally very reliable and doesn't mind being trimmed, bathed, or otherwise pampered.

  • Horse Care - Level 3 - She currently sports glue-on front shoes and might require hind shoes with more athletic advancement.

  • Riding - Level 3 - 4

  • General Demeanor - Level 1 - 2

  • Horse Physical Capability - Level 4+

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES

We intentionally set New Vocations’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds from a private seller (in today's market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at a price between $2,000 and $5,000!). Our facilities are always at full capacity, which means we can't take in an additional horse until one is adopted; a lower adoption fee means horses are more likely to find appropriate homes quickly and we can welcome more horses into our barns. And just think: By adopting one horse through New Vocations, you're actually helping two horses (you new family member and the one who takes his place in our program) transition to careers outside of racing.

In general, our fees are set at $2,500, $1,000, $500 or waived:

  • $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or “unicorn” horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations and great conformation, movement and size.
  • $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example, cleared for 2’6” but not necessarily 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from an injury but have been cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines.
  • $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion-type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
  • Waived: This is for horses that have significant limitations for a riding career or are otherwise difficult to place. These horses are otherwise healthy and have been evaluated by a veterinarian.

Another perk of adopting from us? We do our best to give you the best bang for your buck. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days,  during which they're rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. We're also happy to share the history and any medical records (often including X-ray and ultrasounds) we have on each horse with interested and approved adopters.

While our adoption fees are low, please remember that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for a horse (adopted or otherwise!) can be high. We hope that by helping an adopter save money upfront, you'll have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for and training a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program

New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.

Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes.  With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
