Description
Don't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity: the infamous Money Moves is looking for his forever home! You may recognize the name or face for several reasons, but the biggest one is likely because he ran in the 2020 Kentucky Derby! Our resident celebrity has also starred in several videos during his time with us.
“Money” has really come out of his shell since settling into our program. He is full of personality and will keep you on your toes. He currently goes out with one other gelding during the daytime and they make the most of their turnout time! He does best with buddy who will match his energy and not be afraid to put him in his place, as he can be a bit mouthy and romp around until he settles down.
Money loves attention and scratches, but don’t let him fool you; he can be quick to try to taste of an article of clothing! His mouthiness is never malicious, we firmly believe he is asking for attention which doesn’t come as a surprise ... he was a star on the track for quite some time! Money has no stall vices, however he has an extra latch on his door; he's a smart and sneaky guy and (being the celebrity he is...) we've observed him trying to star in his own remake of Escape From Alcatraz!
So far in his time with us, he has proven to be a trusted mount who is not bothered by his surroundings. Money is currently rehabbing a suspensory injury so he will do best in a home where he will have continued time off and slowly brought back into work with rehab rides when the time is right.
- Leading and Ground Manners - Level 2
-
Grooming and Tacking - Level 4 - Patience is not his strongest attribute and he may threaten to kick and bite.
-
Horse Care - Level 3 - He is a relatively hard keeper, so he gets fat and calorie supplements.
-
Riding - Level 3 - He can be very mellow, but he can also be very fussy and opinionated.
-
General Demeanor - Level 3 - Money is generally quiet in his stall, but he be pushy and mouthy.
-
Horse Physical Capability - Level TBD - Money is rehabbing from soft tissue injuries, so his athletic potential is still being assessed.

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES
We intentionally set New Vocations’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds from a private seller (in today's market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at a price between $2,000 and $5,000!). Our facilities are always at full capacity, which means we can't take in an additional horse until one is adopted; a lower adoption fee means horses are more likely to find appropriate homes quickly and we can welcome more horses into our barns. And just think: By adopting one horse through New Vocations, you're actually helping two horses (you new family member and the one who takes his place in our program) transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $2,500, $1,000, $500 or waived:
- $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or “unicorn” horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations and great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example, cleared for 2’6” but not necessarily 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from an injury but have been cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion-type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
- Waived: This is for horses that have significant limitations for a riding career or are otherwise difficult to place. These horses are otherwise healthy and have been evaluated by a veterinarian.
Another perk of adopting from us? We do our best to give you the best bang for your buck. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days, during which they're rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. We're also happy to share the history and any medical records (often including X-ray and ultrasounds) we have on each horse with interested and approved adopters.
While our adoption fees are low, please remember that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for a horse (adopted or otherwise!) can be high. We hope that by helping an adopter save money upfront, you'll have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for and training a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
