Description
“Wings” is the girl that makes everyone stop and ask, "Who is that!?!" You might mistake her for a real life Black Beauty! This lovely mare is tall, athletic and well-conformed with an undeniable presence. She's got all the traits that make a star sport horse, and she's just what one might look for in a quality sport-horse broodmare or recipient mare.
During her time with us, Wings has been generally low-maintenance. She's typically quiet in the barn, watching the day's events while munching hay. In fact, eating is one of her favorite pastimes; our rehab manager jokes that she has to put Wings on a diet from time to time!
She has remained comfortable barefoot with regular farrier visits.
While Wings can be a bit spirited, occasionally use her teeth for more than just eating and show some mild to moderate excitability and nervousness in unfamiliar situations, we believe this will diminish over time as she settles into a new home and routine. She is respectful while being led with a chain. Currently, she is best suited for an experienced handler, however we believe that the more she becomes accustomed to a routine that allows for more turnout time (she's been on stall rest for a bit and is just getting back outside) and pasturemates, Wings will settle down.
Wings retired from racing in February due to a left front sesamoid fracture. She has spent her rehab time under the direction of our veterinarian and, at this time, is being offered to a non-riding home as a broodmare, recipient mare, or companion. As always, her veterinary records are available for review by interested and approved adopters.
- Leading and Ground Manners - Level 3
- Grooming and Tacking - Level 3
- Horse Care - Level 1 - Wings of Fire is one of our easier keepers. She's barefoot and only requires routine care.
- Riding - N/A - Wings has not been evaluated under saddle in our program.
- General Demeanor - Level 3 - At this time she is not suited for a novice horseman. She needs an experienced handler who is comfortable setting boundaries.
- Horse Physical Capability - N/A - Wings is best suited for a non-riding role at this time. She has a guarded prognosis for any athletic pursuits. As always, her veterinary records are available for qualified, interested and approved adopters.
Wings of Fire came to New Vocations via the NYTHA Take the Lead Program. We're so grateful for their continued support!

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES
We intentionally set New Vocations’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds from a private seller (in today's market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at a price between $2,000 and $5,000!). Our facilities are always at full capacity, which means we can't take in an additional horse until one is adopted; a lower adoption fee means horses are more likely to find appropriate homes quickly and we can welcome more horses into our barns. And just think: By adopting one horse through New Vocations, you're actually helping two horses (you new family member and the one who takes his place in our program) transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $2,500, $1,000, $500 or waived:
- $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or “unicorn” horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations and great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example, cleared for 2’6” but not necessarily 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from an injury but have been cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion-type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
- Waived: This is for horses that have significant limitations for a riding career or are otherwise difficult to place. These horses are otherwise healthy and have been evaluated by a veterinarian.
Another perk of adopting from us? We do our best to give you the best bang for your buck. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days, during which they're rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. We're also happy to share the history and any medical records (often including X-ray and ultrasounds) we have on each horse with interested and approved adopters.
While our adoption fees are low, please remember that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for a horse (adopted or otherwise!) can be high. We hope that by helping an adopter save money upfront, you'll have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for and training a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
