Description
Currently 2022 Thoroughbred Makeover Eligible
This prince is royalty who's ready to claim his throne in your barn!
- Leading and Ground Manners - Level 2 - A solid citizen on the ground, “Carlos” is easy to lead and doesn't need a chain. He does well in a rope halter!
- Grooming and Tacking - Level 2 - Carlos enjoys being groomed with soft brushes and loves warm bubble baths. He loves people and has never met a stranger. He's a personable guy who's always checking pockets for treats! He is a cribber but this has been easily managed with a cribbing collar during his time in our program.
- Horse Care - Level 3 - While he's not currently on any supplements, he'll likely benefit from a joint supplement as he enters more regular work. He currently wears steel shoes on his front hooves.
- Riding - Level 3 - Carlos is a nice ride with a soft mouth. He happily moves forward and stretches towards the bit. He's been an absolute gentleman to ride in the outdoor arena, the indoor and around the farm on hacks. As with any fresh off-the-track Thoroughbred, he's still working on his rhythm and balance, but he's always willing to try new things when asked. His perfect adopter is a confident rider who's has experience transitioning OTTBs into new jobs.
- General Demeanor - Level 3 - Carlos currently enjoys individual turnout, but he's an amenable fellow and would do well in a small group of geldings.
- Physical Capability - Level 3+ - Carlos retired from racing sound, but came to us with a sore body and back. He has had some time off and along with regular bodywork and has re-entered a steady program happily. He is a lovely moving horse with an excellent brain and will excel in a steady and consistent program.

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES
We intentionally set New Vocations’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds from a private seller (in today's market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at a price between $2,000 and $5,000!). Our facilities are always at full capacity, which means we can't take in an additional horse until one is adopted; a lower adoption fee means horses are more likely to find appropriate homes quickly and we can welcome more horses into our barns. And just think: By adopting one horse through New Vocations, you're actually helping two horses (you new family member and the one who takes his place in our program) transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $2,500, $1,000, $500 or waived:
- $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or “unicorn” horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations and great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example, cleared for 2’6” but not necessarily 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from an injury but have been cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion-type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
- Waived: This is for horses that have significant limitations for a riding career or are otherwise difficult to place. These horses are otherwise healthy and have been evaluated by a veterinarian.
Another perk of adopting from us? We do our best to give you the best bang for your buck. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days, during which they're rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. We're also happy to share the history and any medical records (often including X-ray and ultrasounds) we have on each horse with interested and approved adopters.
While our adoption fees are low, please remember that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for a horse (adopted or otherwise!) can be high. We hope that by helping an adopter save money upfront, you'll have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for and training a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
