Description
There is no better dance partner than “Jack”! Kind, handsome, and clever on his feet, he is, without a doubt, the perfect partner.
- Leading and Ground Manners - Level 1 - Jack is easy to catch and easy to lead. Everyone who cares for him at our Louisiana facility loves him!
- Grooming and Tacking - Level 3 - Warhorse Jack loves attention, but is still working through muscle unevenness and soreness from his long and successful racing career. He can be a little sensitive when being groomed on the right-hand side. He prefers the Tigers Tongue (available from our friends at Big Dee's!) to any of the brushes. He can be a little mouthy during saddling and girthing and will benefit from continued bodywork as he continues his transition into a new career.
- Horse Care - Level 2 - Jack has been with New Vocations for several months and in that time we have been able to do a complete turnaround on his feet. He will require shoes up front and behind as the work gets more challenging in his new career.
- Riding - Level 2 - A steady Eddie, Jack walk, trots and canters quietly and with a lovely forward rhythm. He is neither a kick ride nor a hot one. He has his own motor and appreciates riders with soft hands. He hacks out quietly and on the buckle. He is the consummate professional and goes right to the task at hand without any nonsense.
- General Demeanor - Level 2 - He is a joy to be around both on the ground and under saddle. Definitely a horse that will make you smile everyday. With his own equine peers, Jack is the head of the brat pack. He is the alpha in the baby Thoroughbred field and puts all the adolescent geldings in their rightful place.
- Physical Capability - Level 4 - Jack has all the athleticism and ability in the world and would make an excellent partner for any sporthorse endeavor. He also happens to have a wonderful and happy brain! As always, interested and approved adopters are welcome to review all the veterinary records we have on him.

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES
We intentionally set New Vocations’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds from a private seller (in today's market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at a price between $2,000 and $5,000!). Our facilities are always at full capacity, which means we can't take in an additional horse until one is adopted; a lower adoption fee means horses are more likely to find appropriate homes quickly and we can welcome more horses into our barns. And just think: By adopting one horse through New Vocations, you're actually helping two horses (you new family member and the one who takes his place in our program) transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $2,500, $1,000, $500 or waived:
- $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or “unicorn” horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations and great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example, cleared for 2’6” but not necessarily 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from an injury but have been cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion-type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
- Waived: This is for horses that have significant limitations for a riding career or are otherwise difficult to place. These horses are otherwise healthy and have been evaluated by a veterinarian.
Another perk of adopting from us? We do our best to give you the best bang for your buck. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days, during which they're rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. We're also happy to share the history and any medical records (often including X-ray and ultrasounds) we have on each horse with interested and approved adopters.
While our adoption fees are low, please remember that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for a horse (adopted or otherwise!) can be high. We hope that by helping an adopter save money upfront, you'll have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for and training a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
