Description
2022 RRP Thoroughbred Makeover Eligible
We know this lovely lady is someone's dream come true!
“Dreamer” is currently rehabbing a superficial digital flexor tendon injury, but she is well on her way to recovery! Our veterinarians were very pleased with the healing revealed on her most recent ultrasound exam! She is available as a rehab adoption for a reduced adoption fee to a well-qualified adopter who is familiar with rehabbing soft-tissue injuries and bringing horses back into work following recovery. Dreamer needs 60 more days of turnout and a final ultrasound exam before she can restart training. Once fully healed and with training and time, we believe she'll be able to have just about any second career her adopter chooses!
Dreamer currently turns out alone and is easy to handle. She likes to be groomed and loved on! While she has an easy-going nature, she is playful in turnout if she's been stuck inside due to stall rest or weather.
- Leading and Ground Manners - Level 2 - 3 - Dreamer typically doesn't need a chain to lead, but she can get excitable to turn out if she's been stuck inside due bad footing during the New York winters! As her turn out continues and is no longer a novelty after stall rest for rehab, we think new this behavior will subside quickly.
- Grooming and Tacking - Level 2 - She loves attention and is good to groom and clip.
- Horse Care - Level 3 - Dreamer is barefoot while she was on stall rest and hand-walking in an indoor and did well. However, we don't think she'll be able to stay barefoot in all situations. She does best being held with a chain for hoof trimming.
- Riding - TBD
- General Demeanor - Level 2 - Dreamer loves to be fussed over, but she's still a baby and can get fidgety at times!
- Physical Capability - Level 4 once properly rehabbed - Dreamer sustained an injury to her right front superficial digital flexor tendon. If she continues to heal well and her rehab plan is continued properly, she should have few limitations going forward after a veterinarian clears her to return to work with an ultrasound exam.
Honorable Dreams came to New Vocations via the NYTHA Take the Lead Program. We're so grateful for their continued support!

ABOUT OUR ADOPTION FEES
We intentionally set New Vocations’ adoption fees lower than the average cost of buying a Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds from a private seller (in today's market, horses coming right off the track are often listed at a price between $2,000 and $5,000!). Our facilities are always at full capacity, which means we can't take in an additional horse until one is adopted; a lower adoption fee means horses are more likely to find appropriate homes quickly and we can welcome more horses into our barns. And just think: By adopting one horse through New Vocations, you're actually helping two horses (you new family member and the one who takes his place in our program) transition to careers outside of racing.
In general, our fees are set at $2,500, $1,000, $500 or waived:
- $2,500: This range is for horses that we consider to be the cream of the crop or “unicorn” horses. They are horses that have few or no limitations and great conformation, movement and size.
- $1,000: This range is for horses that are suitable for a competitive career up to a certain level (for example, cleared for 2’6” but not necessarily 3’). They may have been fully rehabbed from an injury but have been cleared by our veterinarians for most disciplines.
- $500: This range is for horses that are limited to a flat, trail or companion-type home. These horses are healthy and have been fully rehabbed and evaluated by a vet.
- Waived: This is for horses that have significant limitations for a riding career or are otherwise difficult to place. These horses are otherwise healthy and have been evaluated by a veterinarian.
Another perk of adopting from us? We do our best to give you the best bang for your buck. Most adoptable horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days, during which they're rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated, and in work with a professional trainer. We're also happy to share the history and any medical records (often including X-ray and ultrasounds) we have on each horse with interested and approved adopters.
While our adoption fees are low, please remember that costs associated with ongoing care and additional training for a horse (adopted or otherwise!) can be high. We hope that by helping an adopter save money upfront, you'll have more funds available to cover the continuing costs of properly caring for and training a horse.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program
New Vocations is proud to be the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the country, serving more than 600 retired racehorses a year.
Since our inception in 1992, we've carried out our mission to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses and placed more than 9,000 in adoptive homes. With nine facilities in Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, we continue to work with racing owners and trainers in need of aftercare options and with our adopters to find perfect homes for these most-deserving equine athletes.
