New Vocations Making the Most of ASPCA Grant

Lexington, KY—New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program is pleased to report that the organization received a $50,000 grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The much-needed funds will allow the nation’s oldest and largest racehorse adoption program continue navigating the uncertain waters that have accompanied and continue to accompany the COVID pandemic.

“The number one reason a horse is retired from racing is due to some type of injury,” said Anna Ford, New Vocations Program Director. “It can range from a minor strain to an injury that requires surgery.

“This ASPCA grant is vital to our program as it funds the care of horses in need of rehabilitation prior to being adopted,” she continued. “Although we have seen an increase in owners sending donations with horses coming into the program, this grant supports the horses coming in with little or no financial support, which are often the horses in the greatest need.”

This year’s ASPCA grant will focus on two areas. The first is to continue to support horses coming into the program in need rehabilitation time prior to receiving transitional training with the ultimate goal of finding them a new adoptive home.

The second is a pilot program in which New Vocations staff will collect data on the timing and type of veterinary care and soundness exams for 60 horses. The goal is to see how the timing and frequency of veterinarian exams relate to a horse’s length of stay in the program.
